I just set up a 55gal tank for cichlids. Can I buy feeder minnow to cycle my tank and then just add the cichlids to get rid of the minnows? How many minnow should I get? I'm also using filter media from my 75 gallon community tank to help with the cycle. The 55gal is also already planted with 4 bunches of anacharis.

No need to add minnows since you're already jump starting the cycle with established media. Add pure ammonia and see how the tests run...should be a fairly quick cycle without dealing with "unwanted" fish. A lot of African cichlids are vegetarians anyways and meaty diets can cause issues like bloat.

I would not. Minnows are not kept well (crowded, ect), so you may introduce a disease into the tank.

I agree, you have the perfect start for a fishless cycle. May want to relocate the plants for the time being though or go easy on the ammonia.

I agree. Minnows are just an avoidable hassle and liability, especially in your case

I've found plants are fine with high levels of ammonia...they'll uptake NH4+ anyways.

Plus minnows are usually kept in really cold temps, If you need a fish cycle go to the local pet store and get you a couple of medium sized goldfish and take them out when your tank is ready.
