Ok trying to search for Cycle is awful because I want info on the product not the process (which I looove the article).

The article however, does not do a very good job at saying exactly why the product "Cycle" is bad. I have a friend who has had great success with it.

I want to know exactly what is in Cycle? Why do people hate it so much? I generally understand the arguments but I want to know whats in it. Why would it work for some and not others? What chemicals are included that are so bad for the tank? (I've heard that its completely chemical where Biospira is all bacteria).

Links to other threads are good too.

You really have to search for "nitrospira" to get any useful information.

Basically, Cycle does not contain all of the necessary bacteria for establishing a freshwater biofilter -- see the nitrospira search results. There is also a question of whether or not the bacteria that IS in the bottle is even alive. It has to be refridgerated and Cycle is not.

What Cycle can possibly do is "jump start" the cycle and put it in gear quickly. That's about it. You cannot use Cycle to cycle a tank in 24 hrs. the bacteria still have to form, colonize, eat etc.,. and that will take some time. A 24hr cycle is something that only Bio Spira can do at this point in time.

I haven't explained it in too much depth, because there are others who can explain it much better than I.

I've used it before and found it to be effective. But i can't say for sure because back then i didn't have a testing kit. Perhaps it doesn't have to be refrigerated because it might be like yeast, becomes activated? No idea. I guess if you already have it then it can't hurt to use it.

No, it has to be refridgerated. Cold slows down reproduction and keeps the bacteria from dying off.

If your biofilter dries out you lose your bacterial colony, right? It's the same bacteria so the same thing comes into effect.

If you read all the threads that come up with the search "nitrospira" and start to understand how Bio Spira works and WHY Bio Spira works, then you will understand why Cycle or any of those other products do not really work.
