Hello
Got my 50g tank last week and have set it up on Monday.
Meaning that I've added the substrate (power sand and amazonia II from ADA), my two pieces of wood, filled it with water, connected the canister filter (after squeezing in water from my little, cycled fish tank filter) and turned the oxygen on (this more because it looks nice at this moment).
After filling up the tank we discovered that the tank was angled on the furniture, so we emptied out the water, moved the tank (which was easier as I expected) and refilled the tank.
No plants yet because I do not yet have my light (will be four tube high output TL). The one I got had to go back to the shop because it was damaged and they didn't have another one in. Hopefully it will come tomorrow, but I will leave it of anyway to not grow algae..
Yesterday and today I have added 20 drops of Green bacter (on recommendation from man from LFS)
Ok, now my question:
since there are no fish and no plants in the tank, do I still have to do water changes every day?
My ammonia is 8.0, my nitrite 0.0 and my nitrate 4.0. pH is 6.
Some people advise putting a dead shrimp in the tank, or in the filter. But the man from the LFS where my substrate comes from says this is not necessary with ADA substrate.
Can I not let the tank be until I plant it (hopefully Monday) and then start with the water changes.
Is it not more food for the bacteria this way?
Hopefully you experts can help me.
Because everybody seems to have their own opinion and ideas and hopefully from all your answers I can take my conclusions...
Thanks upfront.
Boelo
