I'm pretty new to this stuff, so I decided to start small and attempt to do things right. I have an 8 gallon tank with a whisper in tank 10i filter. I put some foam in the fountain to dampen the stream, and some cheese cloth around the intake so the frogs don't get stuck.

I put 3 ivory mystery snails in early on. The tank cycled after about three weeks.

Yesterday, I added 2 ADFs. I fed them some thawed brine shrimp and went to sleep. When I got home from work today, one of them was dead.

Should I be worried about the other one? Water params look good.
Water is soft to neutral, ammonia is close to 0, and nitrite is close to 0. Any ideas, help, suggestions?

If it's fungal will I need to treat the water and cycle all over again?

Thanks in advance.

Where did you get the frog? What position was he when he died? Was he floating or sunk, and did he look swelled up like a balloon?

He was a little swollen and pale, though I wouldn't say like a balloon. He was on his back on the gravel. I got him at Petco.

Also, ADF's are very sensitive to ANY ammonia and nitrite, and in general hard to keep. If you keep having trouble (and if it isn't b/c of petco), I'd 1) make sure ammonia and nitrite are truly 0, not just close before getting more, and 2) if worse comes to worst start with something easier to keep, and let the tank get established before adding the ADFs

I tried them before and couldn't keep them alive.. and when I read up on them some more, it mentioned them being hard keepers, and special feeding directions and what not.

Here's an article.. http://frogworld.net/african-dwarf-frog/

Good Luck!

I disagree on them being hard keepers. At least, I had good luck with the ones I kept 8 years ago-I've only had my new babies for two weeks now and am praying for them. Keep in mind that they like a PH from 6.5- 8.0(there are disagreements on that range) and do best in a PH of 7.5 or so. There are people who are much more experienced than I am on the Yahoo! Group so I would suggest joining it for information as well as information on the cythrid virus which is killing our froggies worldwide.

Well, the 2nd one died. I went back to the pet store and asked if there were any problems. He claimed no, then I looked at the tank and every last one was dead. Unbelievable. I'm pretty sure it's that fungus. I have a 2nd tank which I'm cycling. I'd like to move the snails to the new one soon, but I'm worried they're going to bring the spores with them. Any ideas? Thanks.

Even if your ammonia and nitrite were at zero when you added them, it won't be the next day. They represent an increased bio-load and you may have to do water changes until the bacteria catches up.

Sounds like you got bad stock.

I would really join the group, they know more than I do. Here's my understanding:
A reputable seller is the best place to get ADFs. They need to be quarantined for a while if not, up to 2 months at about 80 F. Beware of frogs housed with African Clawed Frogs, as they will definetly have the virus. If you live in CA, the housing is not a problem.
How did they die?
