DaisyGirl is back!

I think your fish will be fine, just remember in the wild water temps probably get even higher then the temps that you have described.

in my case, we have tons of space in the basement of our house (fully furnished, heated, etc) and I would love to put a 50g tank down here out of the way of everything, I picked the spot etc...but my parents don't think that goldfish will need that much water, and I have tried to convince them otherwise, but especially since I took a break from the hobby, they were discouraged that I would stay responsible to the fish tanks and care for them as I should. Which, I would since these are living beings we are dealing with and I absolutly would take the best care of any living creature I could

DaisyGirl,
I just wanted to commend you on your attitude! I don't run into many people your age that feel the way you do. I also believe that every living thing deserves our respect and when you take responibility for a life, it's a very serious matter and not to be taken lightly. I'm very disturbed by people who consider anything other than human life to be less important or, god forbid, disposable! Ok, done preaching! Keep up the great attitude and congratulate your parents for me for raising such a great kid!

try ebay and your local paper for a used tank too, I've gotten great deals that way, it seems like the summer is tank selling time. As for the betta I think a group of 3-5 corys would be good for tankmates, and I wouldn't really get anything else. Maybe a snail if you want ;)

Then I commend you also! In reading the threads on this site, I've seen you give very good advice to alot of folks and I'm very impressed with your level of knowledge! As a matter of fact, I had assumed you were much older. So many young people today are rather vacant (mentally) and unconcerned about anything other than themselves. It's very refreshing to know that there are intelligent, caring, young people out there also.
Congratulate your parents for me as well!

Incidentally, from the way I speak, you probably think I'm older than dirt! In case you're curious, I'm 26.

thank you everyone for responding to me. Iamgroovy, thanks! sometimes my parents dont think I'm so great, but I know they still love me. I was at petsmart the other day getting some toys for my dogs, and I didnt have time to check the fish department to see how much the 55gal kit was...it comes with everything you need, heater, filter, everything...I would just need a stand, so I'm not sure how much the 55 kit would cost, so I'll have to check back next time I go, and start saving! I might go with a barebottom, but I'm not sure, it could be easier and cheaper to do that, but prettier with gravel or sand. Also, that way when my goldfish need a bigger tank, I can use the 55 for a huge tropical community which I've always wanted to do, like with angels and stuff...and I might get a 20gal in a little while that I could fill up with a community...Oh the possibilites. :P

Also, thanks everyone for the help and advice, since its almost the end of summer *tear* the fish tank wont be high in temps for too much longer, so I think the icecubes will work for now, along with the water changes. Next year I may look into a chiller either DIY or store bought.
