I got 6 zebra danios yesterday from the lfs for my Krib tank at home. I needed a good dither fish. One of the danios thinks it's a salmon...you ever watched a nature documentary where it shows the salmon swimming up a waterfall to spawn? well, i have one danio that will swim up against the current created by the filter and swim up where the water is falling from the filter and into the filter!
Yesterday I went to check on the danios to see if the male Krib had gotten any and I only counted 5. I know I put 6 in the tank. so I figured, oh well maybe Killer ate one. But I noticed something moving inside the filter. My filter is clear plastic. So I take out the filter media, and there's the 6th danio. I put him back in the tank and turned back on the filter...a few minutes later, the danio swims full force against the current and PLOP he's back in the filter again! I lowered the water level in the tank and he quit doing it. I guess the water falling is too much for him...I hope.

Lol. That sounds amusing. :)

But now you've got to find a way to prevent it from jumping into the filter again.

yeah, hopefully making the "waterfall" higher from the surface of the tank water helped. i'll find out when i get home after work. i'll have to see how many danios are in the tank. he was pretty persistent though. i had never seen a fish do that before! i've seen them swim in the current directly under it but not actually swim INTO it. and i have to admit it was amusing to watch. the first time i kinda freaked out because i thought he was going to get killed by the filter's motor. but he's a strong swimmer. the second time he did it i was just laughing. after the third time, i just took out some water. because i was afraid he would hurt himself.

Plastic grid could solve your problem. $.26 for a 8 1/2" x 11" sheet at your local Walmart. Check the craft aisle.

thats a great idea! i'll have to try that. at least he will still be able to swim up against the current but wont make it all the way into the filter where he can get hurt.

I used to have a Betta that would try that. Luckily it never made it into the filter; mine wasn't clear! :D

My betta, Thai, will jump. he's never swam into a filter, but when I take the lid off to do water changes sometimes he'll jump out of the water i have to be careful that he doesnt jump out onto the floor. sometimes i will put my hand right above the surface of the water and he will jump into my hand.

Then you can show him off to your friends/company. :)

Lol, if that happened to me he'd probably get to stay in the filter... I hate the noise of the water falling down very far to splash.
