I got 2 GSP about 5 days ago, they were'nt looking that great atthe LFS, but I pucked 2 that had the brightest coloration, they had dark bellies when I got them and I figured after a day or two. They are about 1.5 inches and are eating like little champions, but they still only have bright color on the tops of their heads and greyish bellies. Also their bellies go down about 3 hours after eating. They seem happy, swimming around the tank.

I did a test the day I got them & there was a bit of nitrate in the water so i've done 2 water changes since then and it's down to an accetable level, but I will continue to do changes every other day until it's down to 0.

Should I possibly treat for internal parasites just incase?

Water Temp is at 81, ammonia 0 and I lost the insert for the nitrate test, but it is a faint pink that I know to be low level as I test bi-weekly most times.

I agree, although on the dark belly thing, I freaked out about mine a few days ago but it turns out he was just stressed. But it does make you worry when things are not as they have been. ................... Does their bellies look like this?http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=154626 or worse?

What is your nitrate exactly? Anything below 20 is acceptable. it's ntrite & ammonia that must remain 0. If you are showing eother of those, then the tank is not cycled.
Please read: Green spotted puffers

lferg, their bellies do look like that, and the tank is most certainly cycled, it has been up & running BW for 6 months now. Ammmonia i'm not sure of as my test has run out and where i just had to spend money on a new FW setup I can't get one right now, but nitrites are zero.

I would treat for internal parasites just to be sure.

Some GSPs will change from dark to light bellys all the time its just a problem if they are staying dark. Its usually stress related which could be due to ip since your water params are good as it seems

Agreed on the parasite thing. Treat for them. I was just showing you a pic of mine to get an idea of your belly color not saying your tank wasnt cycled. I trust that you know pretty well what you are doing. :) I would agree that it could be due to parasites and stress. On another note I went to Wal-mart today and they still have lifeless GSP and figure eight's wasting away..... Wish I could save then all. Really chaps my bum to see that.

If enough of them die in their care, they might stop stocking them.

I'm not trying to sound catty at all, but you could stop shopping at Walmart, as protest of their weak ethics. I try to spend my money at locally owned stores whenever possible.

sorry lferg, I was replying to your post and another post all in one. It was a combination post for you and pufferpunk. Sorry if I came off rude on that one :)
