So I ordered 200g of Instant Ocean, a hyrdrometer, and 30lbs of sand. I got the salt and sand today, but no hydrometer. So I check my e-mail to see a new shipping confirmation for what must be my $7 doohicky. Now I gotta wait till the 13th to start my tank. :shakehead:

The waiting game might drive me crazy! :nilly:

Well... if your in a hurry, there are actually directions on the salt bag on how to mix it. ;) I believe it is 1/2cup per gallon (don't quote me on that) but by following the instructions you should be able to get your salt within 1.021-1.024 which is perfectly fine for starting a tank. Just test and adjust as needed once you get your hydrometer, but really, those are not all that much more accurate that following the directions from my experience. I had several, one would say 1.025 and was actually 1.031 on my refractor, another said 1.024 and was actually 1.019.. both were way off and I used them for years without knowing better. When I finally got my refractor and tested them I was shocked how inaccurate those really were.

same here, I have had several hydrometers that I once thought were easy to use and acurate. Wow was I surprised how far they were off. I think I was closer to the true readings by using the instructions on the my bucket of instant ocean. When you can , you really need to get a refractometer.
