Between 1200 and 1300 Friday my pond turned belly up with the exception of three plecoes. There were 2 bass, 3 sunfish, 1 bluegill, 1 silver dollar, 1 catfish and 8 red tail tinfoil barbs. There are still a bunch of minnows buzzing round the steps.??????? Why, 7.2ph, no ammonia or trites or trates. Water is warm, could that mean low o2. Or maybe the new plants. Three filters and aeration runnin full tilt. fish die off.jpgpond fish kill 1.jpgSo anyway any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Mel

Have a lawn service?

How big is the pond and is this the first year?

In your neck of the woods I would've suspected low O2 from a sudden increase in temp as well, but the sunnies and bluegill should've been OK. But also in your neck of the woods, lawn fertilizers and pesticides are sometimes taken to the max and mis-applied as SubRosa suggests.

How warm? What plants? How were they added and when?

It is warm to the touch. Got some water hydrangeas the invasive type. Got 6 from my neighbor up the street. He got them out of his coy pond. I washed them with well water when I got home and tossed them into the pond. That was bout two weeks ago. There is always an abundance of duckweed on my pond. It does seem strange that the 3 plecoes have not floated up and there are a bunch of minnows buzzing round the stairs.

No ferts or pesticides that I know of. The pond is an above ground pool of 27 ft in dia at 4.5ft deep. It is filled with well water and gets a water change every time that it rains plus when filters are flushed at least twice a day. Have another thread here "my little pond".

Warm to the touch is kind of subjective, but doesn't sound high enough to outright kill fish, particularly if it wasn't a sudden increase.

Hydrangeas, or hyacinths? I'm guessing hyacinths, but unlikely to have been the plants, not the right timing.

No other changes?

Got to apologize for getting all out of order. Still haven't figgered out how to use this forum very well.

They are the floating type that fill up water ways. I`ll have to ask him again what the plants are. Always the same feed am/pm of ground chicken heart, gizzards, liver and beef liver. These are all ground together. Also tossed in a hand full of catfish pellets that everyone seemed to like too. The temp just rises with the season and cools in the fall. Still don`t know why the 3 plecoes haven't belled up but sure glad they haven't. Always hold a head count at least a couple times a day.
