There could be several signs ... sudden, unexplained fish loss being the most common. Besides that, your tank params might go crazy. Are you going through any of those?

well i lost a star fish and i can't get rid of my brown algae and now i'm starting to get some sort of red algae. ALso my mushrooms are really shriveled up to lik 1/10 their actual size. I tested my water and nitrates were 0 nitrites 0 and ammonia 0 and calcium is at 480. I went to a buddy of mines house and checked my solinity to see if something was up with my dumb plastic hydrometer and it turns out my hydrometer is way out. Mine said it was at 1.026 while his said my water was a 1.029 so i'm in the process of bringing the solinity down. What else do you think i need to do. I also just bought a hammerhead coral which i shouldn't have becuase its not doing very well either.

A tank crash is where everything seems to be going wrong, and escalating fast...Corals loosing colour and shrivelling or fish and inverts just die....Also many other signs that its all going " Pete Tong "...It seems like the whole ocean in your tank is just dying...

Yeah, if all your other key levels are at 0, more than likely its the salinity. If I remember correctly from your previous posts, isn't yours a fairly new setup ... like not more than a couple of months old? If that's true, the red algae could be just new tank syndrome, which your tank will simply have to go through ... just keep an eye on it and make sure its not something that totally takes over your tank (if so there might be a more critical cause behind it).

One other thing ... besides the params you listed above, have you tested for phosphates and alkalinity? If so, what do those readings look like?

Have you done anything at all different in the recent past ... like add more rock, sand, etc? What kind of a star did you have? If it was a Blue Linckia star by any chance, I'd stay away from it ... they are extremely picky and sensitive to water conditions and are difficult to keep alive in a new setup.

Sorry to hear about the losses ... but try bringing down the salinity SLOWLY and see how things go. What other livestock do you have in the tank? How are they doing?

Yash

K well yes my tank is new. ABout 1 and 1/2 months old. I havn't checked for phosphates and my alkalinity is fine. I didn't think that testing phosphates was that important. What are phosphates and where do they come from?
I just recently added a hammerhead coral which is also not doing that good probably because of the solinity. I don't recall the name of the star fish, i do know it was reef safe and wasn't that blue one you were mentioning. I have 8 blue legged crabs, 2 cerith snails, 4 turbo snails, 1 pep. shrimp and one cleaner shrimp. Also i have a scarlet crab and porceline crab as well. o Ya and an ocellaris clown and purple firefish. THey all seem to be doing fine. My shrimp are molting like crazy, but my mushroom rock is doing absolutely terrible. It is shrivled like crazy. At first i thought it had too much light but now i'm pretty sure it is due to the solinity. THanks alot yash. ONe more question. How fast or slow should i bring the solinity down. Thanks

You have asked in another thread how to bring your salinity down..

Phosphates are ions which are just part of nature..They can get introduced from the water you use, food, any ditrius in the tank...

I know it is probably nothing to do with your problem, but dont put anything into your aquraium without doing full research into what it is, how it lives, what it eats etc etc...I am refering here to the Star Fish..
