i have 4 jack dempseys 2 i got that were about 2.5 inches when i got them and about 3.5 inches now, and 2 i got a couple weeks ago that are about 4.5-5 inches, there is also a 6-7 inch pike cichlid in the tank. the last couple days one of the little JD's has been acting strange he turned very dark like pure black and is fighting everything in the tank besides one of the other big JDs he even bosses around the big pike, he also seems to rub against one of the other big JDs alot could there be fry? i dont know why he would change from the one kind of being picked on to such an agressor in a just a couple days

Jinks' Jack Dempsies did the same thing......turned pure black......became really aggressive......etc. and then they had baby jd's.........so keep an eye out for eggs!!

yup i spotted the eggs last night... should i separate them from the other fish in the tank?? i have a pike cichlid and 2 other JD's with them in there

I don't know if you HAVE to.....with ours, we had to take out the other 2 JD's......they were being severly beaten. Then.....we had to separate these two guys because one was beating the other! (Going back to the fishstore tonight). If your fish aren't being attacked, and you aren't set on keeping the fry...then leave 'em in there, IMO.

IMO leave everything as is unless you start to see fish being beaten up or something else other than ordinary. basically just keep an eye on the fish.

I would separate the Pike and JDs anyway for two reasons:

1.) Your Crenichla may be seen as a threat to the eggs and thus quickly and surgically removed.

2.) Your Pike also needs drastically different water conditions from the JDs.
