Hi I was planning on buying a suncoral, but i also heard opf dendrophylias. I would much perfer the dendros but are they hard to find? also, are they expensive? the only reason I want dendros is that they stay open during the day time hours. also, how can you tell the difference between these two corals? fast replies plz:)

I prefer the dendros but they are at least 3-4x as expensive as a sun coral. Both of mine are open all day. You can train the sun to stay open during the day with proper feeding timing.

I have sun corals and mine now stay open quite a bit. It will happen over time just as puffer stated, placement can't be in the direct light if you really want to encourage them to stay open. I would personally start with the suns (price is a driver here) and then once you get used to them and their spot feeding then move on to the dendro's. Dendro's are beautiful, more expensive and somewhat harder to find.

I would start with the sun also, price is a factor but the intensive care needed for both takes time to get right.
I had a beautifull sun coral that was thriving yet during my annual holiday my fish sitter, although informed and shown what to do let it go without specialized feeding for nearly 3 weeks, by the time i got back it had started to die off and unfortunately could not save it.
Just a note of caution for you.
When my nitrates have stabilized I'll try again and maybe go for the black as well.(tubastraea micrantha)
