I have a rather large angle fish, that is used to living with only an algea eater, 1 guppy and a catfish, recently Ive added 5 neons, 2 mollies, 2 platties, and 3 tetra something or other, and a small angel fish. After adding all these fish, the angel fish just sits in the corner and does nothing, he doesnt seem to be sick, and the other fish seem o.k. any ideas?

Also, some fish espically the guppy, are getting what looks like black dust or dirt on them, it makes them look sickly, any idea what this could be?

25 Gallon , live plants, ph is always going high, so i chemically lower it, ammonia is low, i think the tank is cycled.

One more thing the plants were growing great now it seems they are stunned, and are not growing much, i have twin flour tubes in the canopy.

Thanks

you angel is probably going through this because it has had so many tank mates added to its tank and your pH keeps fluctuating because you are adding chemicals. fish like stable pH better. i keep angles and other soft water fish in a pH of 7.8-8.0 and they love it because it is stable.

the tank is to small for the angels; they need at least a 29 gallon tank (yes the extra 4 gallons do count, for the 29 gallon is much taller), and the bigger angel is probably going to eat the neons. mollies arent the best tankmates for them, because the males can get nippy with them.

your plants are most likely stunted because of the pH chemicals that you are adding

please post your water parameters. ammonia, nitrites, nitrates.

adding chemicals to lower pH may not be the best thing to do a stable high pH iss better than a fluctating pH.

how long has this tank been set up? what filtration do you have.

addin a bunch of fish may have cause a small spike in the cycle..angels don't do well to these spikes.

what is your water change schedule like?

Hi,

A 25 gallon is too small for two Angelfish, but in my personal opinion I think one is fine with the other fish you have. By the way whats the size of your older angel??

Your Angel may be acting that way because of all the chemicals and also he is not use to having all those new fish around him.

You say you have a catfish, what kind of catfish???

Happy fish keeping!!!

Thanks for the reply,

I didn't know a high pH is stable? So when my PH test kit reads 7.5 - 8.0 this is good? I wish the pet store told me 25 gallons is too small for two angels. Filter is an "overflow (I guess)" mechanical Hagen. When it comes to the exact measurements of ammonia/pH im not sure, as my test kit is simple and I just match the color to the chart. The neons swin around the angel, and he does not bug them, its weird. Water temperature is 78. I do a 25% water change once a week. Could the high pH be from insufficient CO2 for the Plants? This tank has been set up for 2 months. I can give away any fish that may be giving the angel grief I have:

1 Pleco algea eater
1 Corydoras bondi catfish
2 platies
2 mollies (only because ive had good luck with them in the past)
1 guppy
5 tiny neons
2 Angel fish one medium size ( i guess ) one small.
3 White Skirt Tetra I think they are almost round, they are the most agressive fish in the tank, im kind of wonder why I purchased them.

This help any? Thanks for the help. Any Idea on the darkening of the guppy, and his sick look?

get rid of the pleco, for one, they need alot more than the scrap foods that escape your fish and algae,2nd,they can get 20" and need about 120-180 gals.
the angels (if you want to keep them both) may be ok in a 40 gal....with a few tankmates.
the neons are a big no no w/ angels, they become snacks and the angel could soffocate trying to eat one.

Hi,

You neeeeeeed to get a couple more Cories. Cories are very social fish and should be kept in groups.

If you don't get another tank, you should return one of the angels, the pleco, and the three White Skirt Tetras. Then add some more Cories to keep your other Cory company. You also might want to return the two Platies so your other fish have some more room.

I looked in my books and I can't find anything that sounds like what your Guppy has. Is there any chance you could show us a pic???

Hope your Guppy gets better and all your other fish do great!
