Desktop Aquarium

i have a piece of java fern in there, and its growing. just not super fast. but its in the middle, so the light is directly under it. java moss is in there too. i dont know about other plants. i heard its easy to get better lighting in the edge tank's. just a thought anyway..

Looking at this, I could probably build a 7 gal 12x12x12 out of 1/8 glass from lowes for pretty cheap. I'd still have some left over I could make a ledge to hold lighting..

I'm not sure..

6G Fluval Edge 2 would work nicely, and the lighting is just fine for tons of beautiful low light plants (very nice list of plants for low light tanks over at The Planted Tank). For an office this would be perfect. For at home, if you wanted more lighting you can replace the 21 LED light with the 42 LED light. Here's a link for the light bar.

I don't much care for the look of the edge. I don't know why, I usually go for the modern.

Does anyone else have experience with the evolve systems?

I have plants in all three of my little tanks (ok, one isn't mine, one is dougall's). Chain swords, crypts and..umm...I can't recall what the other plant is, I'll take a picture. The Spec has more chain swords, some java moss, an anubias nana. There's a bit more algae that I'd like, but otherwise all the plants are doing really well.

LauraL comes to mind right away as someone who's using one for a pico reef. Narwhal72 knows all about them; you can probably send him a PM.

So I read up on building a glass aquarium, and I can't believe I haven't gone this route sooner! I have experience in stained glass so I've cut glass before which I think is the biggest set back for people.

I figured I'd stop by Lowes on my way to the office this morning and check out pricing on 24x36 6mm plate glass. The guy cutting the glass was working with someone who needed lexan cut, and so I waited. 20 minutes later he was done and asked how he could help me. I told him I was building an aquarium and needed prices on 24x36in sheets of glass and I needed to know what thicknesses were available.

He told me that I needed Tempered glass.

I said, no, I don't. In fact I can't cut tempered glass myself, nor can I drill through it.. and if it breaks, it shatters!

He insisted I needed tempered glass and that to not use tempered glass was a safety risk and he was protecting himself and his company by not selling sheet glass to me then proceeded to walk away.

I have never been MORE pissed in my life. I've gotten better service at Petsmart! He never inquired about the size of the tank... or how many gallons.. but made up his mind that I needed tempered glass and wouldn't help me further.

If anything this makes me that much more determined to do this my self.

It's usually easier to just say what you need (IE, 5 panes of glass, cut to X x Y, of 1/4" glass). They don't need to know what you're doing with it and it will save you headaches in the long run.

Aww yes the all knowing expertise of the big box hardware store. I've stopped telling them what it is for with most of my projects.

BTW Next time just reply that tempered glass is only for 15 gallon or larger tanks and only used for the bottom. This is to allow for heavy decorations.

I pulled up google maps and found a local glass place and emailed them.

I really hope they can help me out, mainly so I can comment on the fact that the photo of the building on their site has an NCC-1701-B photoshopped into the sky above the building.
