My tank is newly cycled and Brown Algae (Diatoms) have started growing. Most people say leave the lights off for a while but wouldn't that kill my plants?

P.S.- The algae is forming on my plant and gravel. There is also a green algae on my rocks but they have a similar appearence to the diatoms so I am not sure what they are.

Just let em be...diatoms are common in new tanks and eventually should go away on there own. You can wipe them off pretty easily if they annoy you.

:iagree:

The green algae on rocks - could be green dust algae (fuzzy/dusty appearance) which should go the same route as diatoms.

If it's little green spots, that's green spot algae. Difficult to remove. Could mean your lights are on too long - what's your photoperiod? When I was doing 8 hrs straight I got GSA on my glass. When I broke up the period (4 hrs in morning, 4 hrs in evening) it went away.
