Too many tanks are almost enough...

Planning on upgrading my two 29 gallon tanks to 55 or 75 gallon.

Checked out the tanks at PetSmart (my only local store). 55 gallon with hoods is $119.99; 75 gallon with hood is $199.99!

75 is only 6 inches wider, idea on why $80 more?

Glass can't be THAT expensive!

You also have to take in consideration the price of the light included with the tank. I believe that the 55 comes with 2 full hoods, and the 75 comes with a full length strip light and 2 glass canopies. That in combination with the extra glass needed for the 75 could be the difference.

And also shipping costs goes into the price.

Shouldn't be THAT much! Especially as I'm picking it up at the store.

Difference in the hoods might be it. Don't matter to me, going to use glass tops and shop lights over the tanks.

Need to have a chat with the manager next trip to see if I can get a deal on just the tank (no hoods or lights)

Pretending the top is just flat glass...
48x12x20 = 3552 sq in of glass
48x18X20 = 4368 sq in.
= 816 sq in. more glass
That's 23 % more glass.

24" more inches of materials for frame, silcone seal
24" more seal to install and check (10% more labor on seals)
6" more top brace

Difference in price of top/lights.

Weighs at least 23% more to ship to the store (size can make a difference shipping too -- takes up more room on the truck, etc.)

Holds 36% more water so more likely to break, add some extra on for more returns.

Less popular size than 55, don't sell as many, add a little extra on for that...

:cool: Ransom makes an excellent point. 75g is an 'in-between' size. The next 'popular' size after 55g is actually 90g. Good Luck
