Different Molly Types...

Hi Y'all

I want to add more Mollies to my 25gal tank and need some info on how to do it.

I already have 1 male Lyretail and 2 female Lyretails. I want to add 2 Silver and 1 Dalmatian.

I know that Mollies must be kept in a harem ratio of 1 male to 2 females at most, the more females the better.

My question is... is it possible to have a male of one type (Silver) of Molly for two females of two different types (1 Silver and 1 Dalmatian)?

Or in my set up would it be better to get more females (2 Silver and 1 Dalmatian) to go with the 1 male and 2 female Lyretails?

From what I've seen, you can mix mollies with no issues regarding type, but the gender mix is still important. You might see the males harassing and chasing each other more in a smaller school like that.

I started with four white lyretails and the two males wound up harassing each other and the females to the point of killing the two females, then just beating on each other until one was moved to a separate tank. A later group of Dalmations had a Black Sailfin in it that grew up and became the dominant male. There was some harassment of the other male, but with more females it wasn't as bad.
 
They're all the same - P. sphenops x P. latipinna. There are other species of molly but they're rarely kept. If you're lucky you'll see P. velifera occasionally. But the common aquarium varieties are all just variations of the first listed cross.

Hello! I would definitely follow the ration of 2:1 with any livebearer. I also think that maybe you should just add the females. The males may fight over the females and kill each other. I have only ever had one male at a time, or, like now, I have an all female tank and an all male tank. I think for now, get the females and see how they do, either way you are going to get a ton of babies!!! :clap: Good Luck!!

I have 1:2F with my lyretail and 1:3F with my dalmation mollys in my live bearer tank. Cut down the males as much as possible, but I have 0 problems with my 2:5F ratio and have had them breed twice (platys and variatus in same tank).

Good plan flip. And scratch buying a dalmation....if your lyretails are black and you get silver females, you will in no time have all the homegrown dalmations you could possibly wish for. :)

You want to go out on a limb get one silver and one orange (both f). Only drawback is that it will take till the 2nd generation to get true calicos.
