Difficulties growing java fern

I bought two java fern plants 2 months ago. When first bought, the leaves were green and looked very healthy.
But since then they have developed brown patches on all the leaves including the new growing plantlets! :headshake2:
Java mosses are doing very good.

Water parameters: tapwater mixed with rain water. ammonia:0 nitrite:0 nitrate:not sure (no kits) diy co2, abit overstocked fish, (6 rummy nose tetra, 1 dwarf cichlid, 4 albino corydora and pair dwarf gourami in 25 gallon tank)

What is wrong? It doesn't seem to be old dying leaves (new plantlets also getting patches) or producing spores(no spots but patches)

It used to be in my 25 gallon but now I have moved it onto the window sill in my betta tank. There is no lighting but gets 10 hours indirect sunlight and 2 hours direct sunlight. Its cloudy because I just did a water change.
 
what substrate are you using?

Could be chemical poising from the rainwater. R/O or distilled are much better options than rain.

If your plant is getting enough light and CO2, nutrient deficiency would be my guess.
 
Could also be nitrates being 0
 
No, the 25 gallon does not have the betta in it. Its a different tank. There is no substrate in the betta tank. The java fern is attached to a broken piece of driftwood.
I thought java fern were very hardy and didn't need any special care (fertlisers, co2 etc)
Chemical poisoning? The fish and java moss seem to be thriving.
What nutrient defiency is in my tank?
I also have peppered corydoras in the same tank with the betta and fern so I think their waste will produce lots of nitrate

Is there iron in tapwater?
