It's just a result of the homepage 'random poll' feature.

You know, this never occurred to me until I was just in the AC discussion forum and was reading Roan Art's reply to fishbreeder. I was about to come to this thread and share my newfound wisdom only to realize that it's old news.

Dood u rely suc man i hates u

Actually, there's a flag in vBulletin code that can be set to handle this.

It doesn't lock the thread, but tells the person trying to post to it that the thread is X old, please start a new one.

The code could be changed -- and it wouldn't take much coding to do it -- so that if the person opts to start a new one, the old thread is linked in for reference.

Ie: "This thread is 2 years old. Do you wish to start a new one that will reference this old one?" Y/N

At the bottom of the first post in the new thread could be:

"Reference this thread xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx for related information."

Or some such.

Just a thought and yes, I've worked in vB code before.

sublime - well said, and I agree with you 110%

*Edit because I missed Roan's post*

That sounds like an excellent solution. If it is feasible, I'm definitely in favor of it.

Hey, I don't have that much of a problem with people digging up old threads, but he was on a poll roll! :)

Roan

It had never occurred to me before that there is a reason newer members often bump old "dead horse" threads back to the top. I had noticed a lot of thread bumping from FB and never put two and two together until reading your reply to him.

I definitely think that many older threads have useful information and newer members may find the information helpful and/or have relevant info on the topic. I think the solution you mentioned would be the best of both worlds.

AFAIK, the only people who can change the coding would be an admin, dale or michael. And I haven't seen them around lately...Although, I would like to see them on maybe for a day and maybe they could knock out a few problems here.

I think we have two different subjects happening here... I think Nursie's original post was in reference to random crapola that was being hashed out here in the "general chit chat" forum.... By random crapola, I am refering to things that have absolutely no basis in the fish world and will only run the risk of sparking angst and upset amongst the AC fan club.

In reference to having these notes about "this is an old thread.... etc", I think that's a great idea for topics related to fish and aqua, but when it comes to General Chit Chat, I think they should be axed after a certain timeline... maybe viewable in archives, but with no reply options.

As I said, it could be done, but not without an admin to do it.
