I'd recommend not getting the implant, ever...

While I can see the "evil" side in human use I really think the idea for using the micro chips in animals/pets is a very good thing. I'd balk at using anything like that with humans though.... too Orwell "1984" for me.

We rescued a "pound puppy" some 8 years ago and our vet offered the chip to us. I believe is was all of $15.00 usd. We opted to get it and it was one of those things you don't think about once it's done until it's used. The dog "escaped" after about a year, and was picked up by another person a few miles from home, they took it to the local shelter and they, in turn, took it to a vet to be scanned. Sure enough, the scanner picked up the number and they traced it and we had Shadee back within 12 hours.
Some states are trying to get all animal control and all shelters to carry the scanners and use them on all pets. I think it would be a good thing for all shelter or rescued animals to have one implanted, all the animals records could be found with the sweep of a wand.

I think these chips are an excellent idea for dogs and cats. Think of how many pets must be in shelters, because their tags fell off while they were roaming around (or didn't have proper tags on at all)... if shelters had scanners, and the animals had the chip, they'd be reunited w/ their owners in no time!

I do NOT think humans would benefit from having them implanted... unless maybe an amnesiac or one of those guys like Lenny in Memento...

Due to a nasty coincidence, my dog lost her collar (with her license and our phone #) and then wigged out during some fireworks and disappeared. I had to spend about two nerve wracking weeks combing the pounds, putting up signs, and driving around until I found her at a pound across the county. The whole time I was scared that she was going to be put down or shipped off for experiments before I could find her.

Our new dog has a chip.

My wife keeps pushing me to get one too, even though I remind her that I haven't ever lost my collar.
