For those of you who don't know, I recieved a beautiful 46 gallon bowfront for Christmas after about 4 months of waiting for a tank. It took me hours to get it set up and running and after a couple months of having it I finally had everything in check and it was fully stocked. My angelfish were spawning and everyone was happy and healthy. That was all ruined in a matter of seconds.
I have a shelf that that goes around my room about a foot or so from the ceiling. My cat loves to get up there and sleep. Two nights ago, at about 12:42 AM, Sophie Kitty was up on her perch and either lost her balance and fell from the shelf or jumped off and landed on a huge ceramic/metal lamp which catapolted off the dresser and smacked into the side of my brand new aquarium. I was sound a sleep when this happened and awoke to "CRASH, BOOM, BANG!" and then that dreaded sound that every aquarium owner hopes they never have to hear. I was devastated. I frantically rushed for buckets to catch the water as it gushed from the cracks and the hole in the glass. I was able to catch all of the fish and get them into a bucket (except for a loach which is still missing and another loach which I guess jumped out of the bucket or something because its now MIA) even though I couldn't find my big net. Has anyone ever tried to catch a good sized angelfish with a net thats about half its size? Talk about a pain in the neck!
Luckily, my boyfriend just bought me a python and I was able to use it to quickly get any remaining water out of the tank before it ended up on the floor. I don't know what I would have done with out that thing! I don't know why I didn't think about the possibility of that lamp falling over, but now I definatly know not to have anything that could fall over anywhere near the tank. I went out and got another tank yesterday and got it all set up. I'm hoping that all goes well and that I don't lose any fish because of this ordeal. Sophie is no longer allowed in my room unlessed she's supervised.
