going to be setting up 55gal for discus and angel fish any ideals on what to put in tank as in substrate plants and so on thanks in advanced

What size are these discus you're going to start? If these are juveniles, start barebottom so tank maintenance is much easier and they can grow with relative ease. How many of each fish do you plan to keep? For a final setup, try sand. As for plants, use hairgrass, cabomba, echinodorus and cryptocoryne.

were going to start with juveniles of both the lfs told us we could fit about 10 discus in the 55 gal thats full grown dont know how true that is

Completely untrue, and also angels and discus don't mix well, especially in such a small tank. I'd go with 5 angels, or 4 discus.

Discus do mix with angels.. there are just some considerations to take into account.
discus generally are a bit more shy compared to angels..that said they may not compete well for food.. discus are grazers.
also angels especially lately are known to harbor parasites(capillaria, camallanus) which can affect other cichlids.

qt the angels and treating for parasites is a recommendation. young discus may have more issues competing than older discus..but I have raised angels and discus and found discus will compete with the angels and even more true when adults.

bare bottom is best with juvie angels and discus.
your tank however, may preclude you from having both. Discus should be in a school (no less than 4) you can keep 5 in a 55..this will make keeping angels in the category as 'not a good idea' as it may lead to overstocking issues.
please select your discus from a local breeder or a reputable large scale breeder..do not get them from pet stores(LFS). most(operative word) lfs do not maintain their discus stocks well.
