I have been keeping Discuss in a community tank for about 6 months and everyone seems happy. The Discuss seem really happy as two of them have paired off and have laid a bunch of eggs on the intake hose for the filter.

1st off - should I move the section in order to protect the eggs or spawn from getting sucked up?

One of the discuss seems to be nipping at the eggs (much to the horror of the other) - he seems to only nip off the white ones though. 1 in 30 are white.

What about the tetras and flying fox?

My thought was to move the discuss and eggs into a "hospital net" in the same tank.

So exciting and a little nervous!!!!

I want these babies..............................................

Congrats! It is very exciting for sure. I would suggest just keeping an eye on them. You need to determine if in fact you have a true male/female pair first. Sometimes two females will pair up. Next if you do have a male, you will need to see if he is capable of fertilizing. Sometimes they pair up and spawn even though they are not fully mature yet. Males take longer than females to mature. If you can leave the light on in the tank for 3 days, that is what I do. Or if you can put a light on near their side of the tank for the night so that the other fish leave the eggs alone, that would be good too. IF the male is fertile, there's a very good chance that still most of the eggs will turn white, meaning infertile. Discus are notorious egg-eaters. They may spawn several times, eating even fertilized spawn over and over again. Also, Your water may be too hard for the eggs to fertilize and develop properly. The mouthing behavior you are seeing is the parents keeping tiny debris particles off of the eggs. It is normal. See what happens in the next 48-72 hours. A lot of these questions will hopefully be answered. If you are serious about keeping and raising a spawn from this pair, you have to get them out of that tank and into a barebottom breeder tank of their own. The babies will not survice in a community tank. There is a lot to learn to raise a batch of discus, I suggest you read, read, and read all you can so that you know what to expect and what to do. And get that breeder tank ready!! Good luck!

P.S. They will probably spawn again for you about every 9 days!!
