I ordered 2 discus on staurday and they came in yesterday. I picked them up from my LFS and introduced them to my other discus. The first discus that I had is chasing the 2 new ones around, slapping one with his back fin and bumping into them with his mouth. Is this normal? the 2 new ones are bigger than my orig discus.

pretty normal.

I usually recomend qt for a period of time..this allows time for the new discus to get used to your water and allows you to monitor them for health.

the new Discus are probably pretty stressed out and will usualy become reclusive until they get use to their new surroundings.

how big is your maintank for them?
if you notice a lot of aggression you may want to consider adding more to the scenario.Discus usually develop a heirarchy..(Pecking order) the numbers help spread out aggression.

Main tank is 30 gallons I know its small. I have a 72 gallon I was going to use for my oscars but I'm going to use it for the discus insted. Its odd. the smaller discus fights with the 2 new ones and then hangs out with my angels. Its almost like a child doing something bad and then the child goes to its parents and acts like he did nothing wrong.

The new Discus need time to get use to the new surrounding.. if you have a lot of verticle structure you should be fine.they need a place to hide out.

it may take them several days to weeks to get the gumption to find a place in the pecking order.

keep a watchful eye on the new additions.
do you have a tank you can move them to if there are issues?
they may have problems competing with the others for food.

Now, you reminded me of that odd situation with the angels.:grinyes:

Mike I have kept discus for over 25 years (don't have any now though) and the absolute worst number of discus to have in any tank is 3. There is always an odd man out and it will be harassed until it is stressed to death. 6 is a better number. Juvies like to shoal, they feel safer this way. Adults you can keep only one, a pair or 4 and up. 3 rarely works. Remember as peaceful as they are, they are still cichlids.

I've started to notice that. I havent had them for more than 24 hours and Im starting to see that the first discus will only hang out with the new discus one on one and if the odd man out comes around the oldest will pick on it.
I like this I get to buy more fish:grinyes:

well go ahead and get another 3 fish
good for your discus the one that is the odd man.
