discus question

The number of discus in any tank is totally dependant upon your filtration and number of water changes. The more biological filtration you have, the better. Using a wet/dry filter is ideal for any discus tank as it holds a TON of biological capacity. Also, the number of water changes...the more you do the better, especially with a heavily stocked tank. If you wanted to, you could house 50 3" discus in that size tank...if you do 75% water changes 2x a day and use a big wet/dry filter...but realistically, aim for a stocking density of 1" per gallon...If you get 3" fish, you can house 12-15 of them in your size tank. Or if you want to be even more conservative, go with the standard 1 fish per 10 gallon rule. The more water changes you are able to do on a discus tank, the better.

you can house that many in a 47/48 gallon tank??? I think you may have misread that tank size and thought it was a 180 gallon, not litre.... I would never put 50...14.... or even 12 in that size of a tank... no matter what the water changing schedule was. I'm thinking 3 would be ideal.

Lol, no i wasnt joking...nor did I misread the tank size. Heavy stocking densities promote the appetite of discus and their growth. The only problem with stocking that high is the need for the frequent water changes. I follow the same practice...I put on average 50 3" discus in my 65's and do 90% water changes 2x a day...but then again, im a discus breeder/importer and I have the time to do it. With this practice and stocking densities, I can get a growth rate of 1" per month until they hit the 4-5 month age....then the growth rate slows a bit as they get closer to adulthood. Anyways, since most people dont do daily water changes, you will have to reduce the stocking density greatly. With 50% water changes a couple times a week, he could house the 12 discus in there with no problem...as long as the biological filtration is enough. BUT, if he were to do weekly water changes, then he should stay with the 1 fish per 10 gallons rule. its all dependant on your water changes...especially with discus.
