right now the only thing stopping me from getting discus is the price. I have 200 bucks to spend on their entire setup (tank, filter, discus themselves, ect) and I am having some trouble finding somewhere that has discus for cheap enough that I can afford everything, and I cant find any cheap tanks near me either! ARG! does anyone know of somewhere to get 6 1-2.5" babies for 100-130 bucks? I am located in NYC.
I am planning to get 6 babies, 1-2.5" long and raise them until adulthood, any pairs (hopefully their will be plenty) will be moved to 29g or 20H tanks. what is the best size to get for them? I am thinking about doing a 50, 65, or 55g tank. it will be simple for the most part, some wood I already have, some java moss and java fern, and 1-2 homemade sponge filters. I am experimenting with food, so the tank will be split in half with an eggcrate divider, and the top will also be made of eggcrate. the light will be a 30" 55 6500K CF, I may eventually upgrade to a better one when I change the tank into a display tank (when they reach about 4-6" and/or start pairing off) and add plants but for now it will be used only to grow very low light floating plant and some moss.
after the experiment I am doing is over (1.5-2 months) Ill remove the divider and probably add a school of neons (I have about 6) and a school of 7 pencilfish (they are in my community tank now and the tank is starting to get cramped). I might also add in a pair of my albino bristlenoses and my two cories.
