Talk to me about this? I would love to have a discus tank but I don't want to deal with the whole RO thing. I've also heard that they need massive water changes extremely frequently. My tanks are a hobby. I don't want them to be a job, but I've always wanted Discus...

I just use tap water, but I still do massive water changes (125 gallons per week in my 220 gallon tank). Keep in mind, I am not trying to breed them, just trying to get them to grow large.

I just age my water for at least 48 hours with lots of prime. As far as water changes I would recommend at minimum 2 x 30% water changes a week.

it depends on the age of the fish and the quality of the water.

but if you have juveniles..it is best to raise them in a bare bottom tank..feed them atleast 4X per day and clean uneaten food=water change.
juveniles should get daily water changes as a result.
when adult..I still feed 3 X day but change water 2Xweekly 30-40% each change.

To me that seems more like a job than a hobby. My first kid will be here in 3 months. No way I have time for that kind of upkeep.

Mine are in hard tap water and just laid eggs. I do an 80% water change each week. They need high water quality, a high qaulity diet (mine only get New Life Spectrum), and a STABLE pH.

Keep the nitrate concentration at no more than 20ppm and you should be fine. Massive water changes are needed for babies in a crowded breeder's growout tank, not necessarily in a home tank with 6-8 in a 75.

Adults are way overpriced, don't waste your money. They are also less able to deal with changes in water parameters (such as from the breeder/dealer's tanks to yours). And it is more enjoyable to raise them yourself.

I don't use RO..my tap is 7.0 I just use a python water changer ..takes about 15 minutes to change out water.
