I know Discus need special tank conditions, if these are maintained, can they be kept in a community tank?

Yes, provided the tank has sufficeint size and you stay away from fish that like to eat the slime coat on their bodies.

Depends on the other fish and how many Discus you plan. In my opinion the 29 would be 2 small. A Discus can reach 8"

Hi, Just registered a couple of day ago hope this helps I have a 5ft tank and have 6 discus (all 6" plus), one ghost knife (12" long) and 8 clown loaches. All have been happy together for about 5 years and I have had no problems. But I agree that 29 gallons is probably to small for Discus in a community tank.
