I am thinking about starting discus, I am going to reseal a tank I had leak this weekend, so i would like to know what I would have to do to make my water ready for them. I have very hard water to begin with with but I would like to try my hand these beautiful fish. Thank you

The trick is to get Discus raised in local water. Then you wont have many issues. Then just do alot of water changes.

What do i do if I cant find any in the local area, what should I do at that point?

Discus tend to prefer softer over harder water. You dont give your params so it is hard to say if it will work or not. You may need to look into ro in order to get your tap into a better range for them.

The need warmer water, not too much current and regular water changes. They tend to be grazers, so multiple smaller feedings are the way to go.

My Ph is normally around 7.5 to 8.0, in my angel tank, and normally 8.0-8.5 in my cichlid tank. How do I do a RO system for a tank?

I keep my discus 's at 85.5 ph 6.2 daily PWC @ 30% (25%RO 5%Tap)feedings 4-5 times a day. I have 4 juveniles that need this amount of care.

I see you are in IL if you are close to Chicago there are a lot of discus breeders in and around there.

To start off I would get the largest ones you can afford as they will be easier to deal with. the smaller you go the more water changes and feedings you will need to do.

Get either 1 or 5 or more fish nothing in between they will pick on each other till they kill the odd one out.

Actually, I keep a pair of adult discus in a 25 gal. I have had both a male and female in there and currently have 2 females. (One was erroneously sexed as male.) The two ladies have been in there for some time now and regularly spawn with each other. While I can't say there is 0 aggression, it is minimal and not an issue.
