I am in the processes of designing an integrated sump (also known as a "side wall" sump, ect.). I have considered the traditional rectangular sumps, but I am turned away by the amount of space they take up in the tank in order to get a proper GPH. That being said I have considered different designs. Lately, I have been hearing a lot about the Hamburg Mattenfilter sponge filters. I especially liked the corner version of this filter. I used this design to come up with a rough blue print of a "corner sump"

Details:
1. Like a traditional 3 chamber sump, this will also include 3 chambers. Although, Instead of having them flow from one side to the other. This sump is designed to have a mechanical filter on top of fluidized media. Allowing water to pass through each stage freely.
2. The third chamber hold the pump and the heater

I would greatly appreciate any tips or ideas

Guess I don't see the flow clearly from tank, to pump, complete path thru media and the return to tank....

I guess my biggest concern would be that if your water level got too low, you would lose filtration. Why not just make a HMF? That would tackle Murphy's law better IMO.
