I done this with a 15G tank. Works fine for me. One thing though, if the outflow is all on one side the water will skim over due to lack of water movement. I put the filter outflow half and half over the glass. If you got 2 filters or a powerhead don't worry about it.

I done it this way, with the glass because I wanted a small opening on the bottom so there would be a stronger current to pull waste and debris under the glass and back in to the filter intake. With eggcrate there would be to much surface area allowing the water through to the other side, nothing to pull debris to the intake side. As I said if you have 2 filters don't worry about it.
does lowes sell egg crate? if so, what section can i find it in? also, how much are they & what size do they come in?
