Trying to build a 40 gallon tank stand can someone help with ideas to make its support the weight as well as look good but not cost a lot of $$$

Supporting the weight is easily done inexpensively, but doing fine finish work in wood costs a lot more. So it depends on what you mean by look good.

I think how I would do it is a little irrelevant. What skills do you have? do you weld? do you have wood working skills? Do you know how to paint and make it look good? Are you satisfied with unobtrusive or do you want fine furniture?

There are options if the answer is no to most of that, but if you want a nice looking wood stand those might not be good enough for you.

James, I'm all for DIY and making something for a small tank like this out of 2"x4"s and plywood should be easy, but keep in mind, you can get a Titan EZE double metal stand for $70 or less when they're on sale. Like said above, If you had to buy all the materials AND make it look nice, you'd be way more into it than $70 with your time and materials. The 65g one is for 40g breeder tanks, etc. best bang for your buck IMO http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produ...d=PLA_G_6194&gclid=CLaCz9XdntACFR5MDQodg7QEyw

When I built mine I lived in a place where the local lumber yard (non chain) had their own mill works associated with them and you could get all sorts of trim for reasonable prices considering the selection. What you choose to trim it with in part depends on what you have available. I suppose you could make corner trim out of doweling or out of square blanks cut out of larger maple stock. Run the router or a plane over the corners to take the sharpness off of the trim and there you go.

I used baseboard or backsplash trim on top and bottom on a large stand or on a smaller stand used all the same size smaller trim. Used same plywood for the doors as the facing and use the trim to reinforce the edges and give something to screw the hinges into. Finish it off with a magnetic close and you are good.
