Do Bulldog Plecos need wood in their diet?

Most Pleco do- but in researching my Bulldog (Rubber Mouth/Rubber Lipped) Pleco before buying him I noted that several sources online made a specific mention that this pleco does not need wood in his diet.

Thus, although I've long intended to put a piece of driftwood in my aquarium- I haven't rushed it thinking my bulldog didn't need it. (I've been curing a piece in salt water outside for the last 2½ weeks to leach all the tannins out- changing the water when it gets brown-tinted).

Back when I was cycling I got some cheap bulbs from Walmart- one of those things where you buy a pack of about 5 and they're magically supposed to come alive with-in a few weeks. Mine never did- they've been in about 6 weeks- I'm considering removing them- I've lost hope for them... especially since they now appear to be partially eaten by my bulldog.

The last few nights he has moved a couple to the entrance of his cave and appears to have eaten off the woody outer coating of them. (I assume it was him).

It makes me wonder if he is so desperate for wood that he is eating the bulbs. He is well fed- did a wonder on my diatoms- eats his veggies like a good boy and I always drop in a few algae tabs and shrimp pellets before lights out. (hopefully he finds some before the shrimp do). He's still mostly nocturnal- but does come out during the day and forages from time to time when the kids arn't thumping around the house.

They're (Bulldog plecos) not supposed to like wood- I wonder if he was misidentified or if the sites online that specifically say he doesn't need wood are wrong. (he looks just like the bulldog pleco photos I've seen).

Should I go ahead and bring the driftwood in- and accellerate the process of preparing my driftwood by boiling it for a long time? Wood was sitting outside above the soil in the sun for 9 months and has been salt water cured for 2½ weeks... not quite ready yet as it still leaks a little bit of tannins out... but it's getting closer.

My loaches ate all but 1 of the bulbs too before they sprouted, must be tasty.

Needing wood is different from liking it &/or the stuff on it. There's no reason not to give him some, except I'd worry about getting rid of the salt much more than tannins. There are some pleco foods that contain wood, I know Sera has 1.

I don't think that they need wood, I have 2 pieces of driftwood in my tank, and I don't know that I have ever seen my bulldog pleco on there. Under there as a hiding place, sure, but on it and eating it, not once.

Maybe I should buy some of that pleco food now- just to be safe.

I didn't know if I should "rush it" adding the driftwood. Was a little bit worried when I began to see him attack the bulbs- thinking maybe he was looking for a wood substitute.

I was doing my own piece because: 1) I have some nice interesting roots from clearing out some of my woods. 2) They're bigger and better looking than anything I've seen at Petsmart (the only place locally that seems to sell it). 3) It's free- not $20+ like a comparable piece would be.

Wood will be soaked in fresh water for a couple of days- and then boiled inside for an hour or so before being placed in the tank. When I feel it is ready... I don't think removing salt will be a problem... it does after all dissolve in water readily.

If he doesn't NEED wood- I won't rush it... I suspect all my inhabitants will appreciate the wood- so when it's ready it will be added.

Just as an update to this thread: I gave my fish wood!!!!!! :thm:

I brought the wood inside and accellerated the tannin removal by boiling it for about 3+ hours. It was a pain because even my huge pots were too small to fit it all in at once. My wood is quite big and twisted.

The transformation in my Pleco is amazing. He used to hide all day in his cave- rarely coming out- and then immediately hiding when he saw any movement in the room.

Within 24 hours of putting the wood in he was a changed fish... he's frequently out during the day now. Even with my kids dashing and thumping around he's not hiding- he seems completely unbothered by movement.

Absolutely astonishing the difference the wood made. Last few days it's been great to actually SEE my fish.

So whereas he may not "need" wood to live- he certainly seems to "need" wood to be happy. He's often seen resting on the wood now... problem is- he's produced quite a bit of saw-dust on the floor underneath the wood!

Highly recommend anyone with a bulldog pleco to give your bulldog wood- even though everything you read might say they don't need it.

That's neat, I wonder if it varies from fish to fish. Mine have 2 pieces of driftwood that he can hang out on, but I am almost certain I have never seen him on there. Under it, on the glass, under slate, etc, but never on the wood.

Glad yours is now happier :)

Good to hear about your pleco liking his new wood.

I have three babies in my tank and they love hanging out on it. The piece in the middle seems to be their favorite.

just a thought... wood is considered roughage for a plec... seems before the wood personality of your plec goes hand in hand with what i'd do if i were bloated, constipated, cramped, etc. and massive dinosaurs were right outside my room and i had no idea if they were interested in making me a snack.

a little duralax and 2 days rest and i might just take my spear out for a walk and have dino-burgers with fred and wilma.

Well she's carmed down now- after a week of activity and happyness from the new wood- she went back to her normal game of hiding all day... although- if she is out and about and I stick my hand in the tank to replant something she no longer hides...

... she's not bothered by me anymore- or activity in general... she just prefers to be nocturnal now.

... Incidentally- shortly after I made my last post on here she began to develop eggs... it's almost as if giving her wood did something to spur her egg production.
