I was just wondering if guppy females always die after having fry? I have had 3 females that have had fry in the last 6 months and they all have died about 1 week or so later.

They don't always, but it can definately happen. I think it is also alot more likely if the tank conditions in general are not good. It is a stressful process, so if other factors add to that stress it might just be enough to do them in :o Any problems with other fish? What happens before they die?

no problems with other fish. I just have really bad luck with guppies. For some reason all my guppies just keep dying. My fry are doing well this time though(cross my fingers). We will see what happens. My water conditions are fine, tank is clean. I do regular water changes at least once a week and test water twice a week. I change filter foam and carbon once a month, and also vaccuum gravel about once a month.

Hi pikwik
Looks like that's how it is !!
I too have had similar experience with Guppy females - to an extent that I have vowed never to have them in my tank again.

I am just now venturing into trying to breed these beautiful half black pastel guppies I got for my daughter recently. I never thought I would want to breed guppies...lol..but this guy and gal are gorgeous ! (so I want more!)

Anyway, I've read that it's a good idea to seperate the female from the males after she births...so she doesn't have to put up with his constant attention which can stress her out. My female at present has a belly full of fry, but doesn't seem to want to let them go...(shrug)...I hope this works out alright !

Most guppies from LFSs these days aren't exactly the hardiest fish. I don't have much luck with females directly from the store either, but the fry tend to be hardier. I have 6th generation fry now and the females regularly give birth with no complications.

You might also try, if you want to breed have healthier guppies in your tank (the fry would be them) getting a feeder female and a fancy male or vice versa. My guppies resulted from that and are doing exceptionally well.

my females never died after giving birth, actually they thrived in my tank. the strange thing was that every male guppy i bought died within a few days, including the first one i bought with the females. all my male fry lived though (well, the ones that didn't get eaten).

what can you do? guppies are weird.
