I finally have all of my live rock in the tank with the protein skimmer, powerhead and heater running, but I'm seeing a potential issue... The last couple of days it's gotten unseasonably warm here in southern california and this is not making me happy. The tank is in my room, which happens to be upstairs and not in a particularly well ventilated room in my house as the sea breeze blows on the opposite side of the house from my room. To make a long story short the water has shot up to as high as 85 degrees (I obviously only have the heater set at 78 so the heater is not affecting temperature at this point). I am not liking this at all. I knows temps are supposed to go down around here, but I don't think the little critters that ARE in the tank now are appreciating me very much. I'm trying to keep as much cool air blowing on the tank as I can, but it's only having a minimal affect at best.
So this brings me to the question of a chiller. I was REALLY hoping I wouldn't need to look into this, but we're not even to summer yet and I know there's potential for the same type of weather as we are having now and by then I will likely have fish and inverts that I will very much not want to kill! My tank is a 40g acryllic (if that makes any difference) and I have no sump. So from the very brief research I've done it looks like I'd have to get an in-line chiller, but I don't know and that's why I'm asking
So, my questions are:
1. Do I need a chiller?
2. If yes, do I want to go in-line or submersible type (requires sump I don't have)
3. If I got an in-line chiller, how would I have to do the plumbing?
4. How would the chiller work in conjunction with my Pro-Heat II Titanium heater (electronically controlled type)?
Thanks!
