Do I need a new heater?

Hi all! In my 29G hand-me-down tank, the heater was acting erratic so I took it out. My thermometer says that 70-80 degrees is the safe zone, and my house is at all times between about 70-85. Do I even need to replace the heater? I've had it out for a couple weeks and the tank is hovering around 70. As the weather heats up here in Phoenix, it'll move up. All I've got in there (remains of old, dwindling schools) is 3 serpae tetra, 1 danio, 1 cardinal tetra and 1 betta. If I can run it without a heater, I'd just as soon do so. Thanks!

Also, just an update from an earlier thread... the abandoned betta is doing fine in there.

I would add a heater. Stable temperatures are very important for tropical fish as temp swings can stress them. You want a minimum temp of around 76 degrees, in my opinion. I personally opt for 78 degrees because of certain fish I have.

My betta had lots of problems, i bought a heater and...... IT'S ALL GONE....
