I currently have 2 guppies and one is a brightly colored male with a really fancy patterned tail, the other is a female whose back half is navy blue. They are always changing color, my male has a spot on his sides that comes and goes. It is very noticeable and my female will actually lose all the navy blue and bring it back.

I'm positive this isn't some sort of disease but it is very interesting to me. All I could find was others experiencing the same thing but no documentation. Like this:

It is exactly as she describes except when my male does it he isn't necessarily always trying to breed. He also gets brighter so I guess it could have something to do with brightening up for showing off or something. Was just interesting that my female does it too.

Something else to note is my females eyes. The "whites" of her eyes will go completely black and she looks like she just has a larger black eye and then back to white so it looks like a normal eye.

It just really interested me and interested me even more when I noticed others seeing it but not being able to find much about it. Any of you experience something like this?

I know that fish will change colors (fade in, fade out) according to mood and are often at their brightest or most colorful when ready to mate. I have never noticed a change in the eyes but since you have mentioned it I will watch for it.

The color thing is not limited to just guppies. It's fairly common to many fish. I never paid much attention to it with my guppies since they seem to always be in the mood.

Yeah I ad heard about it. I guess I never thought that it would be as pronounced as I saw with my guppies so I didn't correlate it. It is very noticeable (and really quite amazing to look at when you turn your head for a few minutes and look back and it's almost like a different fish) and I just never expected it to be so pronounced =) very cool to see

My orange male guppy will often change his face to a yellow color if he is stressed out (idot swims under the filter output or under the water flow when I am filling the tank).
