That's where I go sarcare! It is worth the drive. We joined the fish club today, we figure it will save us a lot in the long run.

:D

My LFS is the "FishPlace." Store carries just about every fish you can think of & all the equipment needed for those fish, sw or fw. They even have a back room that's done up with ponds & koi fish. Very nice place.

I'm outside of Buffalo & I've known people to drive up from the border of Pennsylvania to go there. Everyone who works there knows what they're talking about. & it's less than a mile & 1/2 from me!

Same with me. Whenever I go to mine (fins, feathers, paws and claws) to look for a fish I come out with what I wanted. And it's right down the street!!

My LFS is a small store but the owners are very knowledgeable about all kinds of fish.

1 smart employee the rest kind of wander about drooling

Fortunate

I am lucky to have one of the finest stores in N. California here, Caeser's Tropical Fish. The owner is dedicated to the advancment of the hobby, and most of the emplyees are fishkeepers as well. In general, the staff is quite knowledgeable and the stock is well kept and healthy.

thats how one of the shops by me is. the head guy and his brother know almost everything, but the other kids just walk around going "ok ill get that for you...."
but at the other LPS, the people know close to nothing. all they know is which filters go with the tanks and which cartridges go with which filters, what meds you use for certain diseases, what you "should" use for water conditioner (but remeber people, we dont have treat a betta's water, we just have to let it sit for a day... even though it is stuffed full of chloramine) and the inch per gallon rule.
i am much more hesitant to go there and i only go there if i need to get supplies for my tank that the usual LFS is out of... especially after i saw someone arguing with the employee, after he tried to educate the person trying to buy an oscar, that an oscar wont fit in an eclipse 12 gallon, and they sold it to the person with the 12 anyway. i fell ike im going to get into an agrument over stuff like that and there just gonig to say "your a 14 year old kid what do you know" but then again obviously im not giving people an oscar for a 12 gallon fish tank, so obviously i know more than you... but anyway, they also had S.american cichlids marked as African, and when i told them, they just said, "it doesnt matter, there all cichlids" :thud: even though they need entirly different water :thud:
sometimes i wonder

Hey Guys,

I will be putting together a fish store search and rating website as part of an independent study for my MBA.

It will consist of a google-map interface to search for fish stores in your area, as well as a review tool to rate your LFS on certain criteria. I always see threads about good or bad fish stores, so here's your chance to let the public know your experiences! I hope this will be a really useful tool for the entire fishkeeping community.

And so, if anyone would like to help out, I've put together a little discussion forum with project documents and questions/issues to consider:

http://www.fishiz.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=21

I would like to enlist fellow fishkeepers (and fish shop owners/employees) to provide opinions and feedback in this endeavor. So, your participation would be greatly appreciated.

Please check out the forum and see what the project is all about!

Thanks!

- Chris
