Does adding more of the same fish really quell aggression?

Ive been hearing quite alot about how adding more fish of a same type will help keep there aggression levels down or at least more within there group but does this really work or does it only turn one bully fish into a possie of bully fish ?
My question is how will having a possie be any better for the other fish in the tank when they werent having a gggrreeeaaatt time befor now with 6 of kind there all of the suddon suppose to be better off I dont get it anyone have any experience with this subject?

Yes, it is true for many fish. Tiger barbs are a great example. If you only have a few, one will usually dominate and make the others miserable, and sometimes go after the other fish as well. Once you get up to about six, one guy has a hard time dominating the rest. If you have even more (ten, fifteen, etc), there are too many for one to dominate, and they all seem to get along better.

It's really hard to say.... I have five Chinese algae eaters that do very well in their group of five; they only pick on each other. With my Tiger barbs, I had six and they frenetically chased each other all around. Through a freak accident, I lost 5 and have one left... he is now really quiet and hangs out with the Clown loaches. I like him quiet!
I think for the most part, adding more of an aggressive fish allows them to pick on others of their kind and leave everyone else alone....Each aqarium is diff. The best thing is to allow a TON of hisey holes and live plants for everyone to hide in...
