Does anyone do any hiking or backpacking?

A friend and I are planning a backpacking/motorcycling trip in early September. We're going to ride 685 miles from Albuquerque to Death Valley (elevation -282 ft below sea level), ride another 105 miles to Lone Pine CA, then on to hike/backpack up Mt Whitney (elevation 14,505 ft above sea level) on a 22 mile hike, then ride 829 miles home. It's going to be an 8 or 9 day trip, depending on how long the mountain takes us. Has anyone else gone on a trip like this?

I've gone hiking, and camping, and motorcycling.. but never a motorcycle camping trip. Sounds like fun, but I have zero experience in that kind of desert climate. Mind you don't roast your head inside your helmet.

As for the mountain camping.. sounds grand!
