I dyed my hair blonde/copper (very reddish) for 5 years using the basic temporary stuff you can buy at any drug store (it's temporary, but on a natural blonde still leaves nasty roots). My hair was so totally damaged that no amount of conditioning or hot oil could help it. The ends split if you looked at them wrong.
I'm back to my natural medium blonde now and will never dye my hair again. It's so much healthier now! I celebrated the day the last of the dyed remnants got trimmed off. :dance:
