Does my Guppy have a name... other than 'mixed fancy guppy'...?? LOL

So I heard that breeding guppies was great for beginners. Went to the pet store and bought myself a pair (yes I do know about ratio, but they were together happily for a couple days then I put him in another tank as soon as he looked like he might be annoying her...). Chose myself a pretty boy and a nearly pretty girl and brought them home.

Now of course I'm learning lots more about Guppys and wondering... what's my pretty boy? Is he just the general mix-up you'd expect to pick up from the general pet store or could I call him a 'type'. I know there's a million 'varieties' and he certainly won't be bred true from any particular line but I'm still interested in what others might think.

Is he really a pretty boy, or am I just biased? ? ;)

The naming of guppy strains is based on many factors including the long genetic lines of both parents, maybe back several (many, many) generations. I don't know exactly how they are considered "pure strains"...but new strains are created by selective breeding for certain traits,: tail shapes, colors, patterns, etc.

I'm not sure but your top fish looks like a "snakeskin" by my vague understanding. The orange tail may be another genetic identifier & maybe the black boarder or pale tail part near the caudal peduncle...Unless you have a very strong interest, there really isn't any reason to worry about "pet shop" guppies other than you find your fish pretty. There isn't a good way to discern the parentage of guppies kept in a mixed group, they can & will mate indiscriminately with almost any other livebearer, not just guppies. You could name it a "tequila sunset snake" or something, but unless you can reproduce it reliably it's just a guppy. Enjoy it for that.

If you really want to know more there are guppy societies or clubs all over...but don't expect to be taken seriously without extensive genealogy records, it's its own little world I don't understand. Good luck!

Not my thing... but there's lots of information at the IFGA.

There are links tehre to local clubs too, in case tehre's one close to you when all this Covid stuff blows over.

Thanks for comments folks, very helpful ?
No I'm not bothered to get all technical about it, interested but at a casual level.

Love your name suggestions F fishorama ? might just use something like that! But I won't be pretending to be anything fancy.

Also looked up the ifga thanks, but couldn't see anything about types of guppies without becoming a member.

Does anyone have any comments about what style his tail might be?

Also because of his shimmery 'neon' body colouration would that be a bit of 'metal' type showing through?

Thanks!
