Question for all the non-single members - does your spouse or partner support this great hobby of yours, especially when you want to add a bigger tank?

I got back into this hobby about three months ago (after thirty years). I have a 29g gold fish tank in the living room the the entire family enjoys. Now I want to set up a 55g+ tropical tank. I have the perfect spot in the basement for it. Sadly, my wife keeps saying no.

What's your experience with your spouse or partner regarding this hobby?

Wife supports it. She likes the fish although not as much as I do. She likes her 3 cats and a mini lop rabbit. I also buy colorful fish that she likes. I do not keep the fish tank in the basement however I've got it in my office.

Maybe you can buy your wife something as expensive as the 55 gallon you want to setup? ;) instead of letting her think it's your tank, have her think of it as both of YOUR tank, maybe she'll help you aquascape what not....

If she still doesn't let you have it, keep begging....

boyfriend supports it. He used to think it is silly, but it has slowly grown on him. He wants a tank of his own now, with mollies. I don't know if he'll ever get un-lazy enough to do it, though. He does still think I spend too much money on my stupid fish, but what does he know?

Mine is very supportive and in fact sometimes I find myself frustrated because she wants equal duties in the caretaking.

I have to keep myself from showing any frustration there though because in reality I know that it is great that she is involved and that in order for me to go all the places I want to go in the hobby, I’ll need her support.

I’ve got a 55g waiting in my parents basement that I want to go all out with (heavily planted community tank with CO2) when we move into a new duplex in August and I’m going to leave her in charge of picking out the new environment for our 29g. She is leaning towards a cichlid or freshwater puffer tank right now.

My girlfriend is quite supportaive and enthusiastic about the hobby herself. She is getting her own 20 gal dwarf puffer tank setup and she helps me with everything from aquascaping to which fish she likes. Its great to have her involved.

my wife is a little hesitant...
she allows me to buy but with a lot of convincing... since arowanas are quite expensive..
but if only cichlids... she's quite supportive :)

half and half

At first he let me get fish just to get me off his case about getting pets for my daughter and myself (no dogs, no space, no cats till we move, no hamsters till the child won't try and eat them - unlikely - but those were the excuses he came up with)....Our first tank was small and undemanding and not messy (he's a neat freak) since then we've upgraded a couple of times and now I'm mostly happy with my 80G, 29G, and 10G....hmmm but what about that stunning stand I saw at the.......NO.....but it's a bargain.....NO....less mess, I promise I'll keep all my fish stuff neat and tidy and the stand will hide all the wires....NO....okay but how about a backgroud to hide the wires and a new pump for Bob (the betta)....FINE... :) .... and so it goes, one day I will get that stand (to go with a 150G ha ha) we'll see...I catch him watching Seymore (the pleco) from time to time and he'll make comments like, "Seymore's getting huge!" Or he'll go loach hunting, and he's always inspecting the tanks to see if I've got something new in there, and well that makes me happy to know that he notices the tank and the changes that are made to it.....if only we had more space...hmm like that room he calls a study....that would make a nice fish room :p

my wife loves it, shes very happy with the new 130 over the old 55. she has her own fish in there, although shes quite new to the whole thing. i keep telling her that tinfoil barbs will eventually eat her fancy guppies and her cory cats, but she enjoys them all the same.... for now, kee-hee. *shifty eyes*

two words for fancy guppies....... "African Butterfly" ;)

I drive my wife nuts with the hobbies. 1st it was computers, then fish-tanks, then headphones, then cd's, then coffee, then coffee roasting and so it goes. I think my only saving grace is that when I start a hobby I continue. I don't just ditch it when I get tired (usually).

Whenever I spring an idea on her she teases me, "wait I know, it only costs $50?" Typical example... the Eclipse System 6. me: "Come on baby, it's on sale for $40." then it needs substrate and a heater. then it needs plants. then it needs a new light. then it needs a new filter. After it's all set up. me: "hey check out this Red Sea desktop aquarium... i could take it to work and it only costs $30. It's on sale!

She loves coffee and I make great coffee so she puts up with me ;) Part of being married is understanding and supporting your spouse... even when you don't agree with what they are doing. Nobody said you have to agree 100% of the time, but you do have to respect each other 100% of the time.
