Hello everyone! I have a new 10 gallon tank that I purchased 5 days ago and began running it. 3 days ago we put in 3 red eye tetras and that's it.Now, the tank smells like dog pee.I know that ammonia is a primary offense in urine so naturally I checked the ammonia levels...they were zero.Ph is great, water is clear, temp is at a steady 78.5 and the fish are happy and energetic. But the STENCH  !!!!! The tank is in our bedroom so you can imagine sleeping near that, but now the smell is permeating the entire house! The clerk at PetCo told me that the tank is cycling and the odor will go away eventually, but we have gotten some really, really bad advice from that store before so I wanted to check with you guys. What do you think? If it is cycling, how long do you think we have before the smell eases up? I was planning on doing a 15% water change tomorrow - wise? Thanks a bunch everyone! :) Jenni :duh:

LOL...Yeah...I'm sure that no one except the fish have peed in the tank and yes I have a filter - It's a Whisper Power Filter.

you may have had a bad kit...its a possibility. Was it a strip test kit or a liquid test kit? High ammonia would be my first guess...

i had the same problem once with my 10g too. it was because my ammonia was high. i would do water changes daily of 50% of the water, test daily with a liquid test kit, and i would even get a bio wheel filter. theyre awesome and remove ammonia. my tank is overstocked at the moment and i still have 0 ammonia. they also keep the water clear. if you have any other questions or concerns or anything about this then let me know and ill help you to the best of my abilities.

good luck and i hope the smell goes away because i know how bad that is.

I also had that problem with a 20 gl. It smelled like dead fish in my whole house. It had only been running a couple of days when it happened. That was before I knew about cycling and all that stuff.I didn't know what to do so I just opened some windows and it went away on its own after a couple of days.If you can stand it that long.I'm sure I should have done the water changes , but I didnt know that then.

that happened to me when i had gold fish in my tank but then i put in tropical and i had a little discolored water but it went away after a while just make sure to change the stuff in your filter and clean it out it help keep me posted cause i also have a 10g and i could probably help with something but i doubt all
