dont know what to put in tank

what if i took the betta out then how limited would i be

I think you are still fairly limited anytime you have a smaller tank. I have a dwarf 'rommi and 6 red eye tetra in a 14 gallon tank and that's pushing it (may even be a little overboard). I have to be very strict with tank cleaning to make sure they are happy and they seem to be. I wouldn't even think of adding anything else to it.

I guess it comes down to what you want: small school of fish or one or two 'large' fish. And by large I mean betta, 'rommi, etc. Sorry I'm not much help but I can never wrap my head around a stock for a small tank (my 14 g took me weeks to decide on a stock and like I said, may be a little crowded).

Ohhhh, maybe one of the small badis (Scarlet Gem Badis, not the larger one that gets to like 3")? or a couple of them? Or how about some white clouds? Maybe 3 or 4 each of goldens and long fins? Should work I think but would research. A small school of most of the danios would probably work as well... that's all i can think of now.

one more edit.. maybe a small school (5 or 6) of some of these smaller fish and a pair of small platy's? Might be pushing the limits though.

If you keep the betta, then I would suggest 3 Panda cories (or Pygmy Cories, or basically any cory that stays small).

If you rehome the betta, then I would suggest a Dwarf Gourami and EITHER 3 smaller cories OR a school of 6 smaller tetras like Neons or Cardinals (6 danios might work, too).

humm, rummy tetras?
The tank is too small for these active schoolers.

Think i would look at a handful of Serpae (sp?) tetras..
Not compatible with bettas due to fin nipping habits.

i've read that gourami's and bettas do not make good tankmates. can't recall the source of this info. can anyone confirm this is true or just hogwash?
Depends on the species and personality. Generally pearl gouramis, honey gouramis, moonlight, samurais, chocolates and licorice gouramis will work well with the wild betta species (not counting Betta splendens in general). Female B. splendens could work but this is mostly trial and error as some females are as aggressive as the males.

Panda cories prefer cooler water, an opposite to bettas.

ive thought about putting a few female bettas in it and let it be
Is your current betta a female? If so, it'll work otherwise no.

I would suggest NOT putting a male Dwarf Gourami and a male Betta in a 10g. tank because they're both very territorial and I think there would be a lot of nipping and fighting because the tank is not big enough to establish their individual territories and Dwarf Gourami's can get to be a good size.

im not really sure about any of those types of fish but i think ill take my male betta out and rehouse him then put 2-3 female bettas in

would that work?

my wife has a betta in her tank full of different gourami with no problem
