I'm about to buy 22 lbs of live rock from dr foster and smith... the select figi live rock.

Is this quality live rock or should I look somewhere else? Is the threat of die off from shipping something to worry about?

How do I prepare it to be placed in my tank?

I bought LR from there a couple of months ago and was/am very pleased with it (Tonga ridge/shelf). I'll try to find the post where I wrote about it.

Do you plan on curing it in your tank or in a separate container? I cured mine in a rubbermaid with a heater and powerhead. I read so many different ways to cure it online but just decided to follow their way of doing it:

It took about 16 days to fully cure.

I just found the thread about live rock. I wrote a sort of "review" at the bottom buying from Drs. Foster and Smith versus another company I used.

Since you're in Lawrencville, why not just jut over to that pet store on the cr of 206 and business rt. 1. They seem to have lots of cured LR, or did when I went there.

Petco on Rt. 1 also has a good amount of live rock, usually. The last time i was in there they sold me 2 10 lb pieces for like $30 total. Helluvadeal.

Dr. Foster's seems like a good deal, especially if you're ordering other stuff, but their shipping/handling is pretty pricey.

Also, if you don't mind travelling, places like www.manhattanreefs.com has a great classfied section, and there's quite a few LR from this area for sale right now.

I don't want to turn you away from drs foster and all, since I'm sure they're great, but grabbing some already cycled rock out of a tank and sporting it home real quick to put in your tank vs. cycling it for a while after having it mailed might be another option for ya.

:)

yeah, its like 10 dollars a pound at Pets Plus at the circle of 206. That's pretty pricey. I'll check out petco as well.

I was under the impression that the rock you bought was precured. It says on the site it is. They did it for you so you don't have to cure it. you just put it in and the cycle starts.

Is this wrong?

From what I gather, if there's no fish in there you throw it in and it'll start your cycle. The die off from the shipping will do it.

If you have fish, the die off can spike your parameters and kill your fish.

sorry I forgot to add my tank specs.

the tank is completely empty. no fish, no nothing.

In that case, follow the curing process on the bottom for cycling a fishless tank. The link that was provided above.

Yeah, usually "pre-" cured isn't fully cured. There still might be some die-off during the shipping process.

Although mine took 16 days to fully cure, I did combine it with another order of 75lbs. or LR from a different company- and there was a LOT more die-off on that rock over Foster and Smith's rock. So it might not take as long just curing their rock by itself.

I bought 35 lbs of base rock from them and was very impressed. It took about 2 weeks for mine. I have fish only, so I don't have anything more than flourescent lights. If I had better lights I think I would have had some great freebees on that rock. One of the large pieces has a lot of coraline growth on it that has been coming on very well.

I will likely order from them again.
