Drainage for rain?

hey all, have a question.... or fifty.

But the first one is does a pond need a dfrainage system if it rains. I dont want my koi splashing around the yard.

Any help would be appreciated.

depending on your rainfall i'd say yes, a cple good days if solid rain could overflo your pond

Yes, I left a crease in the edge of the liner on the side of the pond where the ground slopes away from the house, so any overflow just runs off and keeps the point at a safe level.

My littl pond routinely overflowed when it rained, but I never had a problem with fish floating around the back yard If you have an edging stone you can remove if it is pouring buckets all the overflow will channel that way and out of the pond. If you are worried about the fish being swept away, a few rocks in the overflow channel should keep them in. I had mine set up so overflow went out between the flagstones mortared on one edge. The fish seemed to hang out lower than the waterline, so they weren't even close to being sucked away when it drained. It doesn't drain really fast anyway, just at the rate it is raining, if that makes any sense

It shows how I added 2 PVC pipes under the lowest siding stones so that the overflow rain goes right out under the rocks.

That is a great looking pond. Does anyone here use a float switch to a pump to prevent pond overflow?
