I had to do an emergency water change yesterday due to an ammonia spike. Lost my otos. =( I should have known better with the increased biolode. I think that extra fish combined with the different water change schedule (one third two times a week instead of 30% three times a week to help combat diatomes) was too much. The ammonia tested at 0 Friday night but it shot up to .50 on Sunday. I checked the tank for uneaten food and did find a few bits stuck behind a small piece of wood.
Lesson learned. Make changes slowly, especially with sensitive fish. Monitor the water like a hawk whle doing those changes. Poor little guys.
