Dreams of a pond, what kinds of fish.

Someday I would love to have a pond with a waterfall/stream feature thats around 5k gallons and is made of one large pool and 2 or more little connected pools in the stream.

I however have this problem with if i'm going to do it im gonna do it right. Partly because I don't want it to look like a hobo did it, and partly because i'm lazy and don't want to redo it. So it will be a long time before I get one. I also am 17 and have at least 4 moves ahead of me and I would hate to leave my pond for someone else.


Anyway I was wondering what kind of fish you can keep in a pond in the middle part of texas.

Here are some restrictions though. It would have a couple res in it and be planted quite heavily.

Heres the big catch though. I don't like goldfish of anykind. I also don't like Koi. What kind of fish could I keep in it?

Also in the smaller pools leading up to the main one I would love to have some guppies because they are sweet and maybe some danios some Crawdads possibly as well.

Well this is just me wondering out loud and what better place to do it.

There are plenty of your local fish who will do quite well in your pond, provided you provide some depth and shade so it doesn't overheat in your nasty Texas summers. Bullheads, many sunfish, mosquitofish, pickerel, topminnows, various minnows such as golden shiners, etc. Few petstore-type fish can handle the extreme temperatures of your area. Mollies might work, and guppies too if the winters don't get too bad.

Of course, goldies and koi are the only fish bred to be viewed from above. Any other fish will generally look like a dark streak, no matter how colorful it is from the side.
