I've just purchased of piece of "Malaysian Wood" at my LFS & I would like to know:

1. How long do I soak/boil it to get rid of the tannins? I don't water yellow water in my tank if I can help it

2. Are there any dangers to having wood in a neon/betta tank?

Thanks :)

1) I dont think you will be able to boil out all of the tannic acid. It could take years in the tank before it stops depending on the wood. The good news is in my experience Malaysian driftwood does not produce that much tannic acid to begin with.

2) No danger at all. The neons will love it. They would benefit from the tannic acid as well.

I would boil it for 2hours, Change the water and boil for 2 more hours, after boiling Soak it in a Tub, Vat or bucket whatever is applicable, for at least 1 week doing a 100% water change every day or evey other day. This process will leach as much Tannis as possible!
